Charles Sturt (1795-1869), the son of Judge Napier Sturt, was born in India and grew up in England, where he was educated at Harrow. In 1813 he received his commission as an ensign in the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment. In 1968, the Department of Education took the decision to build several new Teacher's Colleges in NSW. In July 1968, tenders for the Goulburn Teacher's College were issued and the buildings were mostly completed by July 1970. On June 30, 1970 185 students were enrolled at the college. .
